Dutch Progressive Rock Review

April 18, 2008

In 1978, when punk started to rule the world, American (New York) band Cathedral released their debut album Stained Glass Stories. Although the music on their debut contained strong influences by bands such as Yes and King Crimson it immediately showed that Cathedral had the ability to turn these influences into a style of their own. Especially the upfront bass work by Fred Callan and the totally unique way Tom Doncourt played the mellotron made an incredible impression. In my opinion it’s totally justified to call Stained Glass Stories one of the best progressive rock records to come out of the States ever. I’m pretty sure that the album must have had an influence on Anglagard. With the growing popularity of punk, however, the possibilities of releasing progressive rock records got more difficult. In 2003 the band finally got back together again to start rehearsing for their next album. They experimented for three years and after a year of recording their second album The Bridge was released by the end of 2007.

On this album Cathedral consists of lead vocalist Paul Seal, drummer Mercury Caronia IV, guitar player David Doig (who replaced original guitar player Rudy Perrone who left the band because the three years of rehearsing proved to be too much for him), the earlier mentioned Fred Callan on bass and Tom Doncourt on mellotron and other keyboards. So that’s four of the five original members. After nearly thirty years these guys haven’t slowed down one little bit. They certainly did not take the easy way on The Bridge. It is an album that takes all of your attention and a lot of spins before it uncovers its beauty. It’s not an immediate friend. As on their debut the music of Cathedral is still dramatic, full of passion and in places dark. Progressive rock is still at heart of their music but they’ve taken onboard some new influences. There are some David Bowie influences on Satellite and The Lake reminds me of Peter Gabriel. And lastly there are some hints of avant-garde. Those moments reminded me of bands like Underground Railroad (on Angular World for instance) and Deluge Grander. Main influence however is still King Crimson.

The level of playing is terrific throughout the album. New man David Doig is a very versatile guitar player and displays his acoustic abilities on the brilliant Kithara Interludium. An acoustic guitar piece of more than six minutes which impresses from start to finish. You can hear a lot of his acoustic skills throughout the album, whilst on the other side of his guitar spectrum is the mad solo he plays on Angular World. Paul Seal has the perfect voice for this grand and dramatic music, which is convincing and full of passion. Fred Callan's bass playing is often the driving force of the songs - very upfront and aggressive. Tom Doncourt leaves the soloing on this album mostly to David Doig but his keyboard work hasn’t really changed much since Glass Stained Stories. He does use some other keyboards now but there is still a lot of mellotron to be heard on this album. And I must say his keyboard work impresses again. Listen for example how he uses a strange keyboard melody first and then follows this with some beautiful mellotron strings on Satellite. Or the pitchbends on Monsterhead. Or his string chords at the start of The Secret. Brilliant stuff. And finally drummer Mercury Caronia IV who has a very varied style of drumming, utilising an array of percussion. But I believe he’s using an electronic kit for this album and I really don’t like they way it sounds - it makes the album sound a little compressed. So please next time use a regular drum kit. But it’s really the only negative thing I can find.

There are too many highlights to mention. Still I will name two. Number one would be the album closer The Secret. A very progressive song (also with some great saxophone playing) that displays perfectly all the things that are great about Cathedral. Dramatic, grand, dark in places and that finale! Incredible song. The second highlight of the album is the Crimsonesk Angular World that completely lives up to its name. The Bridge is an impressive album from start to finish and as I said earlier it will ask for your complete attention and several spins to get your head round the music. It’s not an easy album but the rewards are very, very, very satisfying. I hope they won’t wait another thirty years to release the third album.

Conclusion: 9.5 out of 10

Hello friends,

The best greetings from Poland to all people at the CATHEDAL camp!. I have decided to write to you as a fan, journalist and DJ devoted to intelligent and melodic rock music. Since many years I have been running portal MLWZ (MLWZ means "Small Lexicon Of The Great Bands" English), which is the major web site in Poland that is exclusively dedicated to promotion the symphonic/progressive rock music. I co-operate with a large number of independent labels and numerous progressive bands promoting their CD releases in Poland. I try to do my best for promotion the recordings of the artists playing their recordings on my weekly radio show on local station Radio Alfa Kraków 102,4 FM. My show is 11 years old now and is on air every Wednesday between 8 and 10 pm Central European Time (7 and 9 pm GMT). It is also called MLWZ ("Small Lexicon of the Great Bands"). The web site address of my portal and radio show is www.mlwz.pl . You can listen to the number of archive shows there (in .ogg audio format, WinAmp required) in AUDIO section (link AUDIO in the menu. English menu is on the top of thew web site). You can find there the current and archive playlists of the shows, links to the bands/artists/labels, the reviews I wrote for Polish edition of Metal Hammer magazine, news and other progressive stuff. On the MLWZ show, I am presenting the Seventies bands which have sparked the imagination of music lovers playing progressive rock, art rock or symphonic rock. But the MLWZ show features first of all the younger artists. Not only Marillion, Pendragon, Galahad, IQ or Pallas but most of all debut bands and the ones which can currently boast the most interesting albums. The playlist always comprises plenty of new music exclusive to the MLWZ show, which in many cases means the tracks before their official release. Only on the MLWZ you can listen to albums currently not available for sale in Poland. It was the MLWZ show which featured Spock’s Beard, RPWL, Mostly Autumn, Karnataka, Asgard and many others on air for the first time. Apart from new albums, each show features Art Rock oriented news, music memories with a Classic Track Focus, interviews and special guest talks with Polish and international artists.

My another activity for promotion progressive rock artists is the cooperation with Polish edition of Metal Hammer magazine. Since 1995 every month I write the articles and the reviews of progressive albums. The reviews are exclusively in Polish and you can easily find them in Polish Menu (on the left side of the web side) in the RECENZJE section. You can find particul reviews by writing specific name in the window "filtr" or "search/szukaj".

I am very keen on keeping in touch with you. Recently I have read very interesting review of Cathedral album entitled "The Bridge" on the DPRP web site. It seems very promising and I know that your current album is absolutely not available in Poland and that’s why I am applying to you with very kind request about sending me the promotional and complimentary copy of it. I am very anxious to hear your new music after all these good things which I have read in the review. I am verey interested how Cathedral sound after so spectacular release as "Stained Glass Windows" many years ago.
I would like to use your new album for the radio promotion and to spread the word about your musical activity amongst Polish listeners of progressive music. Is And of course if you want I can send you a tape or CDR with eudio file(s) of my radio show in which your recordings will be featured. If only the review of your album appears in Metal Hammer magazine, the copy will be provided to you.

But most of all I would like to ask you to keep in touch with me and keep me informed about news and any firm details concerning your musical activity.
I look forward to hearing from you soon,

Best regards

Artur Chachlowski

Hi guys - Maybe you recall, over a year ago - My son and I met you on the line of the NYC Porcupine tree concert @ Nokia in NYC! Since then, we learned alot more about Cathedral and what you guys created back in the seventies. We wish we knew more at the time so we could have talked more in detail about your music. Anyway, we have come to be amazed by the music of Cathedral and were wondering how to get a hold of Stained Glass Stories. Please help us, if possible. Also, BTW - congratulations on the new album. It is really getting a lot of positive attention. Thanks for any help you can give.
Regards -

Hi Charlie, hope you get this message.... Ah , I remeber your two trons. One was black and in pretty bad shape. Jerry had some pictures of it looking beautiful and new!
Jerry is an incredibly generous and friendly guy- he let me play his rare and impeccable mellotron collection and record it on my laptop for hours! I think you should expect a laid back weekend full of all the mellotron information any one could want. Jerry's wife Mali is a lovely person and chances are that Ken Leonard will be there. Good luck with your newly refurbished instruments- mine is better than new, Jerry fixed problems I've had since 1974!
